So What About That Garage…?

So What About That Garage…?

Used, misused and abused would be good words to describe most garages.  It’s where you put the stuff you don’t want in the house but can’t decide what to do with, right?   Solution:  forget about the cars and put it in the garage.  Woe to the person, like me, who has their garage visible from a busy street and not located on some fancy curved driveway where all you see driving by is the side of the garage!

Then comes the snide remarks from neighbors who drive by, “I thought I’d better work on my garage after I saw yours”, or from a client, “I definitely decided to purge my stuff when I saw your garage”.

We had a major remodel on our home about 4 years ago and the garage saw the brunt of it.  This is where the appliances that we weren’t going to replace stayed along with all the items other than the furniture that we didn’t want to pay to store.  Here also was the old kitchen cabinet counter which made the perfect, though dated workbench.

In today’s COVID world, garages make a perfect extra room.  For families with kids, they can become great play areas.  For some, the garage becomes the perfect fitness center for those huge machines you don’t want cluttering your house.  Years ago while living in Saudi Arabia, a neighbor invited me into his garage complete with comfortable lounge sofas, a bird in a cage, and a hookah pipe!  You name it, a garage may be the perfect spot for it.

When you think of the average price per sq. ft. of homes, which always should be designated without the garage as the reported sq. ft. is living area, a garage becomes a very valuable commodity indeed.

We have decided therefore to tackle our garage. The first step, paint and tape the existing drywall.  Next step, built-in storage cabinets including a new workbench. Potentially a blank wall section for the new smart-looking Tesla batteries for the solar system, (more on that in another blog).  Finally, epoxy the floor.  Voila, a new huge room to enjoy!
